Kan’ei was primarily a painter but he published some of his flower and bird pictures in a woodblock-printed book entitled Kan’ei Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Kan’ei). Published in 1886, this book included the twenty-five pictures shown in this gallery. Kan’ei drew flowers and birds using a Japanese style called Shijō which combined elements of European painting (e.g., accurate shape and color applied unevenly to make an object look three-dimensional) and Chinese painting (e.g., diagonal design and abundant empty space).
